Animals of Denali National Park

This picture of a Grizzly Bear was taken about the second week of June, springtime in the  high, cold country inside the Park.   This bear seemed quite content to snack on grasses along the side of the park road.

This is one of the most beautiful bears we've seen in Denali.  This Grizzly Bear had a thick, silky coat that seemed to glow in the sun.  Many people are surprised to see just how much of the bear's diet is vegetarian.  This bear was slurping down blueberries about 50 feet off the Park road, and didn't even seem to notice that people were stopping their vehicles to watch it.

This Griz was also foraging close to the Park road.  One of the Park bus drivers told us that up to that point in the summer there had been 190 reported human-bear encounters in the backcountry, and not a single aggressive incident.

This is one happy Red Fox.  It was enjoying a bright, warm late spring day, and casually sniffing along some dwarf birch and willow for mice.  It just happened to sit down right in front of us to scratch.  Such a smile of contentment.

Ahh! Life is good!

This is a small group of Dall Sheep ewes with lambs.  They were soaking up the sun and settling in for an early afternoon nap.  Two got up, faced each other, then stood quietly with their heads together. After a minute they separated and went back to the nap.

This is a bull Caribou with one of its' harem.  The bull was constantly moving around to keep the 30 or so cows from wandering off.  This picture taken in fall shows them at their best.
