We live surrounded by woods, and occasionally some of our forest friends come by for a visit. Moose come through the yard several times every winter, and enjoy eating the last of the garden plants that are still standing.
One of the highlights of the winter for us is mushing sled dogs, the official state sport of Alaska. Sled dogs like nothing better than going for a run, and in the wintertime you can go just about anywhere by dogsled, as the rivers, lakes and wetlands are frozen over. One of the dogsled races that we enjoy following is the Yukon Quest, which runs more than 1,000 miles between Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada, and Fairbanks, Alaska. The small dirt road that we live on is part of the Yukon Quest trail, and when the race starts in Fairbanks we set up lawn chairs at the end of our driveway to watch the mushers go by, even with temperatures as cold as 35 below zero.
To close out this section of Alaska Photos we have included one of our favorites. This shot was taken in late August around midnight, with the lingering light of sunset on the horizon to the north, and the aurora dancing over the Brooks Range mountains, high above the Arctic Circle.
Thank you for taking the time to browse our images of Alaska. The incredible natural beauty of Alaska is a constant inspiration to us and is reflected through our Jewelry and Dream Catchers with their many links to the Earth. If you have any questions or comments, please e-mail us.
