3 day dog sledding camp/ dog handler camp
This is a progressive learning experience for those wanting to take additional time to improve their dog mushing skills or just spend a little bit more time "living the dream" that is working with sled dogs. This is specially tailored to fit your individual needs and learning styles. It is strictly progress and your own speed and comfort level. Enjoy the comfort of a local hotel or B& B and all the convenience of staying close to civilization while each day enjoying a dog sledding adventure. Our goal is to teach you to drive a 3-4 dog team on your own in a safe and controlled manner by camps end. Souvenir packet and t-shirt at camp completion.
Syllabus
Day #1 First day is introducing you to the sled dogs. A 3- 3.5 hour dog sledding school. Doing an introductory run. Class room and warm up session. Take charge of the dog team with the security of an experienced musher on board. Basic sled handling skills and a mushing overview.
Day #2 A 2 hour mushing lesson with your own team (depending on your skill and comfort level) and your dog musher/instructor leading the way with another team - or you can opt for the security of an experienced dog musher on board the sled you are driving. You will be responsible for hook up and unhooking of the team as well as being capable of stopping and securing your dog team. The session will concentrate on your sled handling skills and "mushmanship". Talk on sled dog nutrition and basic first aid is covered.
Day #3 A 2 hour lesson with you at the drive bow of your own dog team (depending on your comfort and skill level). You will once again be responsible for hooking and unhooking your team as well as snacking the sled dogs at appropriate times. Option to attempt a more challenging trail if desired.
** Lodging and transportation to our dog yard is not included** Max is two people per camp. Arctic gear provided (if needed). Hot beverages and snacks provided. A basic level of fitness is required to participate in the dog sledding schools and dog sledding day camps
