Candice Smith named All-Academic

University of Alaska Fairbanks senior Candice Smith was named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference volleyball team.

To be eligible for the team, which was announced on Wednesday, players had to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.

Smith is a social anthropology and art history major. She has a 3.50 GPA. She is fourth in career blocks (280) and in the top 20 in career kills (576).

Three Alaska Anchorage players, seniors Kirsten Hunley, Kasey Kuelper and Starr Burgan, also were named to the GNAC Academic team.

The Nanooks (13-8 overall, 10-6 in the GNAC) finish the regular season with matches at Seattle Pacific University on Friday and at Western Washington on Saturday.
