SENATE : Homosexuality - The Senate on Monday agreed by a 63-36 vote to amend the Improving America's schools Act of 1993 to cutoff aid to schools promoting homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle alternative.

Amendment supporter Sen. Robert C. Smith. R-N.H., said some school districts use federal aid to distribute publications "so graphic and so disgusting that I can't display them here on the floor of the United States Senate."

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., disagreed, saying the amendment would remove the local discretion that is the hallmark of our legal system." A "yes" vote favors barring federal aid to schools promoting homosexuality.
