At 10:00 A.M., Rudolf Hess was summoned to Hitler's shabby apartment. Neither man revealed what was said, but, since Hess was not to see Hitler again until evening, this was probably the time that he received an unusual order. He was to wait until an hour before Kahr's meeting began, then reserve, for the evening, a small side room in the beer hall, near the podium where Kahr was to speak. Rudolf Hess walked away from this meeting through a city that was destined to explode, a Munich that had no idea that the detonation was only ten hours away.

In one of the catacomb-like basements beneath the Capuchins' St. Anna [Roman Catholic] Monastery, within the city, was a secret cache of three thousand rifles that had belonged to a postwar rightist Home Guard organization that had been disbanded.

The weapons had never been turned in to the authorities. As part of Hitler's scheme, some of these rifles were to be distributed during the early evening hours to the Third Battalion of the Munich SA Regiment; even now, these Storm Troops had no idea of the existence of the arms dump under the monastery, and had not even received orders to assemble that night.
