THE VATICAN AND THE U.N.

Sentiment continues to grow against the unique and privileged Non-Member Permanent Observer status in the United Nations held by the Holy See.

When a petition from the Center for Research on Population and Security aimed at removing that status appeared in the November/December 1995 issue of _The Humanist_, the response was overwhelming, resulting in over a thousand signatures -- more than had been received from its prior publication in any other periodical. And signatures are still coming in.

Meanwhile, at the UN Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, a coalition of international women's organizations, a population group, and Catholics for a Free Choice circulated a similar petition of their own, gathering over a thousand signatures in the first few days. Signers included governmental officials, heads of large international Non-Governmental Organizations, grassroots activists, and members of perhaps every religion in the world, including a number of Roman Catholic nuns. That petition continues, as well, to circulate worldwide.
