What do you get for a wedding present for a future Nobel Laureate?

Well, I made a writing box...

The pieces - recycled furniture...   Table parts and drawers...

Trimmed up
Sides run through the planer
Profile routed off the sides
Sides cut to size and test fit
Rubber band clamps sure come in handy...
Bottom made from drawer parts
Jig made to cut tiny splines in ends of side pieces
Grooves...
Splines...
Glue up -  I did opposite sides before the last two corners so I could fit the bottom in place
Bottom cut to shape, oiled, and in place
Starting the lid
Helper?
Lid cut to shape
Edging
Top prepped for carving
Fitting the top
Helping hands inside - they keep the lid in place at opposite corners
Making the feet fit
Yup, that works...
Scrub, sand, scrape...
Ambigram Monogram  (say that 3 times fast...)  Ambigram?  Yup - reads the same from top or bottom - stand on your head and see for yourself    :)
First cuts
Finished first cut
Tweak, snick, swipe, scratch...
Ready for finishing  -  Two
First coat on the lid - thirsty little bugger ;)
Fourth coat
Ready to go - 6 coats and a little rubbing...
