16. Shadrach Claywell

His autobiography is contained in Cumberland County Kentucky, Volu me 1, 976.968, H2w, SLC Family History. A portion follows: "Shadrack Claywell was born in 1760 in Worchester County Maryland. He was living in B edford County Virginia when called into service in the Revolutionar y War in 1778. he served several tours. Near the end of the war he was taken prisoner by the British and during his captivity became infected with the smallpox, and being very badly afflicted with it, he was lodged in some exposed outhouse , and was otherwise cruelly neglect ed. To save his life he agreed to join the British after they promised that he would be taken care of and better treated. About the time of his recovery from this disease, the war came to an end and Claywel l was taken to Canada by the British and it was several years befor e he made his way back to the states. He returned to Bedford County Virginia and lived there until 1806 when he removed to Cumberland Coun ty Kentucky. The 1810 Census lists him with people known to have bee n living on Bear Creek. His wife and six children are listed in his h ousehold. In 1832 he applied for a pension and was added to the pension roll. About 1836 he was charged with serving the enemy during th e Revolutionary War and removed from the roll. Shortly after this h e was cleared of the charges and received pension until his death i n 1839." Shadrack Claywell stated in 1833 that he was 73 yrs, born in Worce ster Co, Maryland, then moved to Bedford Co, VA and then to Cumberlan d Co, KY in 1806.
