Peace is proclaimed in Europe. Not in cheerless Lebanon.

The doleful headlines speak only of continued killing.

The killings appear to doom the most recent and promising attempt to end a murderous 15-year civil war. The survivors of Lebanon's last elected Parliament met last fall in Taif, Saudi Arabia.

Urged on by Arab peacemakers, they agreed to a constitution that would finally give a fair share of power to Lebanon's non-Christian majority.

Christians who signed the accord were defamed as traitors. The Maronite Christian whom Parliament elected as president was murdered.

Killing has become an end unto itself, zealotry the single constant. Those who grieve for Lebanon wonder how long even that resilient country can survive the fury of its saviors.

NOTE THE NY TIMES REFERS TO A MARONITE "CHRISTIAN",

RATHER THAN ACCURATELY TO A "MARONITE CATHOLIC."

THIS MIS-LABELING IS DONE BY THE MASS MEDIA IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE IMAGE OF ROMAN CATHOLICISM WHICH IS THE PARENT CULT OF MARONITE CATHOLICISM.
