But [men] are more or less ignorant, and it is this that we call vice or virtue; the most incorrigible vice being that of an ignorance that fancies it knows everything and therefore claims for itself the right to kill. -Camus

If this had been an actual life, would I waste it listening to <insert wingnut here>?

I favor King George II because of the truly turn-back-the-clock conservative link to King George III. You remember, the guy we booted in 1776.

However, the obvious reality is that "Dubya" wins.

Whatever nickname you use, you should be sure to link it from your Web sites. The search engines will establish the connections. For example, search for "dumb motherf...er" on Google and you'll get Dubya hits. My own favorite is 'shallow hypocrite' linked to 'www.whitehouse.gov'. (However, Dubya would be marginally less annoying at www.whitehouse.com.)

I teach a college-level economics course. Before I was given the position, I told the director that I could not be unbiased when speaking about Dubya, but that I wouldn't punish students for supporting that scum. That was fine.

So now, the class know not to utter the name of "He Whose Name Shall Not Be Spoken." They know that Dubya and Shrub are acceptable, but other fun nicks are also welcome. I also refer to him as the Resident...

Lecturing tonight was kinda fun as I spoke about the Resident's tax cut...<g>

she stole that from Mark Alan Stamaty (the Bob Forehead part)

In the opening scene of "Washingtoon," Mark Alan Stamaty's classic Reagan-era political comic strip, an insomniac plutocrat is impressed by a late-night infomercial host. "Anyone who can sell glow-in-the-dark coat hangers to me could probably sell supply-side economics to America," he declares. And thus, with guidance from the nation's leading charismatician, begins the career of Congressman Bob Forehead.

No one "stopped the vote count" in Florida.

What the Supreme Court stopped was an illegal re-count (the 3rd counting of votes in selected Democratic counties).

Why don't all of you cut the crap and admit that Gore wanted the votes to be re-counted (in select areas) until he got a total that he liked?

I often call the nominal and real presidents "Bush and Dick".

I just slipped that out and everybody who heard it laughed their balls off, including me.

Then down to Kinko's to make lotsa copies to hand out at protests to anyone who will sign a pledge to make lotsa copies to hand out at other protests, etc.

We can chant it, teasing the Publicans about how we don't have to use naughty language to make our point:

If this had been an actual life, would I waste it listening to <insert wingnut here>?

Interesting that no one has any positive nicknames. Yes, it is generally hard to earn positive nicknames, but I admit I have real trouble imagining anything even slightly like "George the Great" in the context of Dubya.

Actually, when you consider the main defense offered for Dubya's lack of other qualifications, the defense that he will simply hire the best experts in every field and listen to them, the obvious conclusion is that ANYONE could do the job. If that's how we want to run the country, we should just have a lottery and pick anyone at random to live in the big White House.

In that context, perhaps "Fortunate Son" is most accurate, after all. He did take the time to write an entire book on the topic of Dubya, and that was obviously his considered opinion. (But I haven't read the book. Topic sounds too boring.)

George W. Bush has no more a legitimate claim to the presidency than I do to the throne of Norway

    Interesting thread.

My favourite nickname is Junior. I've seen it here on TT and elsewhere and it fits. It's descriptive and contemptuous enough of a descriptive nickname.

I've heard in recent weeks another one:

    George the Dumber.

A good friend calls him "Squint" because of his habit of squinting.

Whatever you call him, we can't call him by the title he prefers, since he never earned that title.

His Irrelevancy, King George the Second.

    Clueless Georgie?

Whatever we finally decide to call him, we need to stick to a single nickname. It needs to be a name that is short, simple, descriptive, at once dismissive and contemptuous, and one that people will know instantly who you are referring to when you use it.

Not sure what that name is, but we'll find it eventually.

    "President" George W. Bush?

    The So-Called President?

    Junior.

If this had been an actual life, would I waste it listening to <insert wingnut here>?

Does anyone have any substantive evidence about Foreign Minister Tanaka saying something that bad about Bush? [The "asshole" report.] I've looked into the matter a bit, and my current feeling is that it is just a baseless Internet rumor. It does have a certain appeal because many of us agree that Dubya really is like that, but my current belief is the most likely source is someone trying to make trouble for Tanaka-san, and she certainly does have more than the average share of people who don't like her. However, even her worst enemies would not call her stupid, and this comment would have to qualify in that category, so I just don't believe she said it. Too off topic to say more, though I'm including some comments at the end of the Tanabata (7/7) entry of The Clothes Have No Emperor Part II. But to summarize, this is probably just a rumor targeted against Tanaka-san, so I think you should just let it die.

However, I now raise the topical question:

What nickname will historians give to the Dubya era?

(And have they already decided on one for the '90s? But I can't even remember for sure if they were the 'Roaring 20s', and if so, why. Roaring against Prohibition? Roaring in comparison to the Great Depression?)

Or, if God forbid he and the Republicans continue to steal elections, it might be called The Fall of American Democracy

It is too soon for any nickname for the 90s, but I nominate Decade of the Dick (inc Bobbitt's, Clinton's, viagra)

Re Roaring 20s--very exciting, broke traditions, beginning of modern pop culture--also called Jazz Age. For more details on origins/etymology, look the term up in a dictionary or do a search on the Internet.

The question of a nickname for Dear Leader seems to be answered by 'Legion;' guy has more aliases than a telephone scam artist.

I wonder if there is another aspect to the question - name the Program. FDR had New Deal, HST the Fair Deal, JFK the New Frontier, LBJ the Great Society. Don't remember what Ike called it, RMN called it "Mine, all Mine." Ronald Reagan seemed to think of it as 'Nancy's World.' Great Leader may have called his program something, and Bill C. talked about Bridges to the 21st Century.

What is the proper name for the current Program? Is it 'The Deal from the Bottom?" The "Old Maid Deal?" "Where's W?" Help me out, we might write History here.

As a nickname for the Dubya era:

    The Stupification of America.

The recent IQ article suggests his personal nickname could be "Hey, Dummy", but it actually reminds me to recommend The Mismeasure of Man by Steven J. Gould, which does an excellent job of showing why intelligence testing is in general very bogus. Then again, I could suppose some people would think that the estimate of 90 for Dubya is too high. For example, the procedure was supposed to be based on unassisted writings, which scarcely applies to Bush.

Gould's argument was that the system used to discern IQ was flawed; he never implied that dumbness did not exist. See, not only doth W have a low IQ, he hath a high DQ, Dumbness quotient. A rock has an IQ of zero but does no harm when it thinks. The Dear Leader is affirmatively dumb, an actual negative number of smarts. So although few people are indeed as dumb as a box of rocks, Geo W, who is aggressively dumb, is in fact dumber than a box of rocks.

"The Green President" would be a great nickname for the president who ended the Clinton administrations "war on environment". Democrat policies and environmental exremists have left our forests ravaged by fire and toxic waste. We should re-name Al Gore to "toxic defender" because of his link to a certain zinc mine in TN that has been cited 8 times for toxic pollution and his support for destructive environmental policy.

The 8 cites for a Zinc Mine is well below average, and since Gore has been serving his country for 28 years I doubt he runs it day to day.

The not fighting forest fires is a late, but vital step to restoring years of damage done.

Let's not bother with ECs and CHAs.

Besides, Ohio, which is Republican-controlled, has an abysmal record on the environment and has been dragging its feet on numerous violations (I'm sorry for the folks who live there).

And Snippy the Chimp wants to pass more environmental regulation to the states, which means the Ohios of the country will have more reason to drag their feet, unless legislatures and governors bestir themselves.

An older fellow in our car club forwarded this e-mail to me. What is interesting to me is that the guy is a veteran and politically pretty conservative. Clearly, Bush is losing his base as they learn more about him. To know, know, know him is to dislike, dislike, dislike him. Read all the way to the end, the message is on-topic for the thread header:

A lady bought a new Lexus, which cost a bundle. Two days later, she brought it back complaining that the radio wasn't working.

"Madam," said the sales manager, "the audio system in this car is completely automated. All you need to do is tell it what you want to listen to and you will hear exactly that!"

She drives out, somewhat amazed and a little confused. She looks at the radio and says, "Nelson." The radio responded, "Ricky or Willie?"

Soon she was speeding down the highway to the sounds of "On the Road Again." The lady was astounded. If she wanted Beethoven, that's what she got. If she wanted, Nat King Cole, she got it.

Stopped at an intersection, her light turned green and she pulled out. Off to her right, out of the corner of her eye, she saw a sports utility vehicle speeding toward her. She swerved and narrowly avoided a collision. "ASSHOLE..." she muttered. And, from the radio: "Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States."

That is not what Ms. Harris would do. She would decide that the distance Gore won by was inproperly registered or marked and thus they finished neck and neck. Then she would find that some military athletic directors wanted to take 10 feet off of Bush's race course, but didn't get there on time. Since that is not fair, she would add ten feet to Bush's position making him the winner.

There's a German word that means roughly "to throw one's hands up in mute horror and in this state of paralyzing dread to realize that those you need to trust most have confirmed your darkest fears." - Stephen Colbert, Daily Show

I saw a waitress this weekend wearing the following button:

He'll always be ex-Governor Bush to me

Needless to say, we overtipped her. When we were talking after the meal she said that she'd gotten stiffed on tips twice, but it was more than made up for by the many generous tips she'd gotten from people who liked her button since she started wearing it to work.

Another informal survey that says that the polls are wrong, wrong, wrong. Or that conservatives are (among their other sterling qualities) lousy tippers.

A pun is involved since the name originally meant, "noble counsel." A certain English king acqired the nickname, "Ethelred Unred" meaning that his counsel was misguided, and he had to flee England when it was occupied by the Danes.

I didn't hire him. And firing is too good for him.

I'm rooting for imprisonment, along with a large portion of his administration.

Can't you just see John Ashcroft leading the sing-a-longs in the prison recreation area. Imagine Dick Cheney trying to get the latest valve work done in the prison infirmary. Rumsfeld can be the sex symbol of the cell block. And George will finally have time to work out all he wants and sleep on a regular schedule without having to worry about that awful jet lag.

Alas, that only happens in that fairy tale world where justice prevails, and where applying risk management techniques to terrorist attacks versus oil pipelines has real consequence.

Absolutely it has to be funny. Names like "resident" and "traitor" are just to much of a downer. I can't even look at the guy for more than a few seconds before I change the damn channel! I can only deal with him as either an abstract concept ("what is the puppet president being told to do today") or as a joke, or else I'd go nuts.

I have been calling him Wussolini for years. It's easy to take anything with Mussolini in it, cut out the W and turn it upside down and paste it back in.

And it's simply taking his biggest letter, his nickname, and mixing it with mussolini.

And he is like a wussie version of mussolini. A total chickenhawk's chickenhawk. Mussolini would make him his bitch ASAP.

I did like "President Rainman" too, but it takes context:

Mr. President, how much will the Iraq war cost? "A billion dollars." Mr. President, how much revenue will the federal government lose due to the tax cuts you proposed? "A billion dollars ... about a billion dollars." Mr. President, how much does a candy bar cost? "About a billion dollars."

Apparently Robert Novak didn't like the way "this president" was used in the NM debate. If it pisses Novak off....

Modern conservative Republicanism is so full of contradictions it is no longer a political philosophy. It is a religion. They just accept it on faith.

One of my closest political friends hasn't said Bush in ages, just this, consistently: That sorry son of a bitch in the White House.
