Patient Services
Patient services are
available
to anyone in the Tanana Valley regardless of race, age, religion,
creed,
or financial status. All patient care services are offered
free
of charge, adhering to international Hospice standards:
-
Patient must have a
terminal
illness with prognosis of six months or less, as can best be determined
by their physician.
-
All patients are
visited by
the Director of Hospice Services who assesses needs and provides
education
and support.
-
Each patient is
assigned one
or more specially trained volunteers whose role may include respite for
caregivers, emotional support to patient and family, short-term child
care,
errands, simple physical care of the patient, and education of the
patient
and loved ones regarding the approaching death.
-
The volunteer role
also includes
all the special personal touches which so personify Hospice care. They
spend an average of four hours a week, often more, in regular visits to
patient and family. The director continues to make periodic home visits
to provide counseling, support and assistance as needed, and works
closely
with volunteers to help families plan funerals, write obituaries and
provide
bereavement support to the families they serve.
